Are you ready to create and defend the future?
Summary
Without software engineering, you wouldn’t be reading this page. Banking, transport and the app in your hand all run on software that someone had to design, build, secure and maintain, from securing personal data on the apps you use every day to defending entire national power grids from being taken offline. In fact, every industry from global finance to healthcare and manufacturing relies on the talents of graduates who can create and secure complex software systems.
A degree in Software Engineering with Cyber Security teaches you the tools and techniques to understand the world’s most pressing security vulnerabilities. At Queen’s, software engineering is taught as it is practised in industry, and artificial intelligence, cyber security and cloud computing are core to this degree. You will learn the architectures, design approaches and security practices required to build and maintain large-scale, reliable software systems, studying service-oriented architecture and secure software development, and engineering security into software from the first line of code, rather than defending it after the fact.
In an ever-changing technological climate, Software Engineering is constantly evolving to anticipate emerging digital technologies, and the new forms of cyber-attack that always follow. Software engineers are problem solvers, as skilled at refining, enhancing and transforming existing systems as they are at building new ones. This integrated Master's develops the analytical, reasoning and practical skills needed to design, develop, deploy and operate large software systems.
You will receive a grounding in core skills like software architecture, service-oriented programming and AI, as well as specialising in highly sought after skills in software and systems security, cryptography, malware analysis and network security. Through project-based learning, you can shape parts of the degree around your own interests, from mobile applications and augmented reality to artificial intelligence and lifesaving medical technology, going on to advanced Master’s-level options in areas such as fairness and privacy in machine learning and energy-efficient computing. In your final year, you will lead a substantial research and development project of your own, supported by one-to-one supervision.
Employer experience is embedded throughout the degree, and you can choose to spend a paid year gaining professional experience in industry. Through sponsored projects, hackathons and work with prospective employers, you will learn from industry professionals, build valuable professional networks and begin making a difference to real-world problems.
KazaSec's take
Incidents like this rarely start with the headline event itself — they usually trace back to an exposed remote-access endpoint, an unpatched perimeter system, or a credential phished weeks earlier. The organizations that recover fastest are the ones that tested their defenses and their incident response plan before they needed them.
