The collaboration will give researchers access to more than 200 AI models and advanced computing, while students gain new Gemini tools, a 24/7 AI concierge and a Google research ambassador program The Ohio State University and Google have announced a strategic partnership spanning AI research, student tools and campus operations The Ohio State University and Google Cloud have announced a wide-ranging AI partnership spanning scientific research, student services and campus operations, with Google DeepMind technology and a new on-campus AI hub at the center of the agreement.
Summary
The initiative brings together Google Cloud, Google DeepMind and Google for Education across the US university, giving researchers access to AI models and high-performance computing while expanding the use of Gemini tools across academic and administrative work. Ohio State describes the agreement as one of the largest partnerships between Google Public Sector and a US university. Its most visible element will be an AI space in Ohio State’s Innovation District, built around the university’s AI(X) Hub and designed to connect researchers directly with Google teams and technologies.
Researchers will have access to more than 200 AI models alongside AI-optimized supercomputing systems and Google DeepMind tools including AlphaFold, Google Earth Engine and AlphaEvolve. Google is also including Ohio State in an initial group of R1 research universities receiving enterprise access to its AI research agents through Gemini Enterprise. Ravi V.
Bellamkonda, President of The Ohio State University, says the university plans to use the partnership across research as well as the student experience: “In close collaboration with our partners, we will accelerate research across the enterprise through the AI(X) Hub, enhance and improve the student experience and strengthen our AI Fluency initiative goals.” DeepMind tools move into university research The research program reaches across biomedical engineering, earth sciences and the humanities rather than being confined to computer science. Google says its AI for Science tools will be available to researchers working on scientific hypotheses and other complex research tasks, while access to DeepMind models is intended to support work across the university’s existing research programs. One project already named is Project SCARLET, an AI-powered human performance platform being developed with Ohio State Athletics and the Human Performance Collaborative.
The system will use predictive models, computer vision and analytics across Ohio State’s 36 sports, with the university positioning it around training, recovery and athlete health. Karen Dahut, CEO of Google Public Sector, calls the agreement “one of our largest and most comprehensive education partnerships to date.” She adds that the partnership is intended to put Google’s computing infrastructure and scientific models directly into the hands of Ohio State researchers. Rob Lowden, Vice President and CIO at Ohio State, was more explicit about the scale of the work ahead in a LinkedIn post, describing the partnership as extending beyond a technology deployment into “AI, cloud computing and advanced research.” He wrote that the next phase will be about “moving from vision and agreement to execution and impact.” Students get Gemini access, an AI concierge and research roles The student-facing side of the partnership is equally broad.
Ohio State says Gemini Enterprise and Gemini Notebook will be made available through Google for Education, alongside access to Google Workspace for Education for parts of the university community. The university is also planning a 24/7 AI-powered student concierge built on Google Cloud technology. Rather than functioning as a general chatbot, the system is being positioned around specific university services, including academic advising, registrar support and career pathway planning.
A new Google Public Sector student research ambassador program will also recruit Ohio State students to work alongside Google teams, giving participants direct industry experience alongside their university studies. Ohio State describes the ambassador model as a first for Google Public Sector. The university’s wider AI Fluency initiative is another part of the agreement.
Bellamkonda said on LinkedIn that the aim is to place students, faculty and staff “side-by-side with Google partners” through the new Innovation District hub. The partnership also extends behind the scenes. Ohio State says Google technology will be used to modernize campus operations through areas including intelligent infrastructure and cybersecurity automation, while also removing administrative barriers for faculty and staff.
The university and Google have not disclosed financial terms for the partnership. For Ohio State, the next stage is implementation across the Innovation District, research programs and student services. Lowden wrote that the university’s Office of Technology and Digital Innovation will now move from planning into execution over the coming year.
KazaSec's take
Most public cloud incidents trace back to a misconfiguration, an overly permissive IAM role, a storage bucket left open, a default setting nobody revisited, rather than a flaw in the cloud provider itself. A cloud security review is built to catch exactly that class of mistake before it's found the hard way.
