Reliance Jio has said India could be among the first countries to roll out commercial 6G services once global standards are finalized in 2030.
Summary
The telecom operator showcased its proprietary pre-6G technology stack and Giga MIMO Radio at the India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026 in New Delhi on Friday. The company is preparing for the next generation of mobile connectivity, with a focus on improving network capacity, reducing latency and supporting emerging digital services. Jio also demonstrated its readiness for 6G through technologies developed as part of its broader telecommunications strategy.
6G Could Offer Five Times the Capacity of 5G Jio states that 6G networks will offer up to five times more capacity than 5G networks currently offer while cutting down the latency by ten times. This will allow for greater data volume management as well as faster reaction times for some applications. The company hopes that the technology will open up new opportunities for real-time AI, holographic video, healthcare, education, and other digital services of the future.
Increased capacity and reduced latency will be especially important for applications based on AI that need access to information instantly. Jio Unveils Giga MIMO Radio and Common Baseband Unit A key highlight of Jio's showcase at IMC 2026 was its Giga MIMO Radio, which the company describes as India's first. Jio has also introduced a common baseband unit capable of supporting both 5G and 6G networks.
This is in line with the plans of the organization as part of its attempt to develop the technological infrastructure that will be used for future connectivity as well as India’s involvement in developing telecommunication technology. Jio claims to have filed over 8,000 patents, which includes several hundred on 6G technology. The firm has also contributed to over 934 global standards.
AI-Powered Services and Quantum-Safe Networks 6G will make AI services more responsive, with possible use cases being in the field of agriculture, medicine, and education. At the conference, the company discussed the way better connectivity can help develop digital services in agriculture, medicine, and education. In addition, Jio is planning to implement AI-native and quantum safe networks, where the combination of better connectivity and cybersecurity should be ensured.
Additionally, Jio revealed a project on creating the satellite connectivity network named "Sovereign Satellite Connectivity". The project involves the construction of approximately 1,600 satellites of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and 23 ground stations across the country. As global 6G standards should be ready by 2030, the recent Jio demonstrations show that the operator wants to make India an early adopter of future mobile technologies.
KazaSec's take
Perimeter infrastructure like VPNs, firewalls, and routers needs the same ongoing scrutiny as anything user-facing, it's frequently the oldest, least-monitored layer of the stack, and a popular target precisely because of that.
